Gotye has yet to start working on a follow-up to 2011′s “Making Mirrors,” the album that spawned his massive hit “Somebody That I Used to Know,” but the Aussie singer says he’s finally “ready” to write new music.

“I haven’t started writing anything yet actually,” Gotye laughed, chatting with Billboard on the MTV Video Music Awards red carpet Thursday (Sept. 7). “My second album, ‘Like Drawing Blood,’ was released in 2006 in Australia, but I was still touring it and releasing it for the first time in Japan in early 2009. So I lived with that record for a long time.”

The past year, however, has felt like “three or four years compacted into one,” Gotye explained, so he’s ready to move forward, perhaps with a new record. “I’m actually still feeling quite fresh — I’m ready to write new stuff.
