More than eight out of ten gay students report they are verbally harassed at school even as new statistics show a downturn in the frequency of verbal bullying. New numbers in the 2011 National School Climate Study show that about a third of lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgendered students described the harassment as happening frequently. That’s down from 40 percent who reported frequent verbal harassment in 2009. More than 38 percent of the students reported they had been harassed physically during the year, while around 18 percent said they has been assaulted. The thousands of students participating in the survey said a Gay-Straight Alliance group at school helped reduce the harassment.
