The DVD kiosk rental company has announced a partnership with Verizon Communications that will allow Redbox to begin providing Internet video and offerings for mobile devices later this year.  Details are still under wraps, but sources say the price of the new Redbox service will begin at about six-dollars a month for movie streaming and one DVD rental per kiosk visit.  The venture will put Redbox in direct competition with Netflix which has shifted its emphasis to instant-view streaming from its mailed DVD rental service.

Redbox is also moving in on NCR’s Blockbuster Express.  Parent company Coinstar just snapped up its automated DVD kiosk rival in a 100-million-dollar acquisition.  Blockbuster Express began operating more than ten-thousand DVD kiosks after acquiring the brand from the original Blockbuster video rental service, which filed for bankruptcy in 2010.  Coinstar’s takeover of Blockbuster Express is expected to be completed later this year.
