The recent overturning of California’s same-sex marriage ban has sparked a wave of excitement in the world of pop culture. After Proposition Eight was declared unconstitutional by the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals on Tuesday, talk show host Ellen DeGeneres took to Twitter to proclaim she “couldn’t be happier” now that the country has taken “another step towards equality.”
Actress Elizabeth Banks said she started “punching the air” when she heard the news, while Kelly Osbourne said her eyes were “filling with tears of joy.” Other celebrities took a more comical approach. RuPaul told the proposition to “sashay away,” and “Glee” star Cory Monteith joked that finding the ban to be unconstitutional was essentially the same as discovering that the Pacific Ocean is wet.
Despite the good news, the case still is expected to be appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court and “Modern Family” star Jesse Tyler Ferguson encouraged people to continue fighting until all Americans are free to marry. He also directed his Twitter followers to an online petition at the American Foundation for Equal Rights’ website, www.afer.org
