The White House is angry about the Italian clothing company Benetton’s new ads showing President Obama kissing two world leaders squarely on the mouth. The company says its new “Unhate” ad campaign of world leaders kissing is meant to encourage people everywhere to combat hatred. Obama is shown in one ad smooching with China’s president and lip-locked in another with Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez. The White House says it has a longstanding policy against the use of a U.S. President’s name or likeness for commercial purposes.
The White House spokesman did not say if the White House would contact Benetton to stop it from running the Obama ads. The company withdrew its ad of Pope Benedict kissing a prominent Islamic imam after the Vatican protested.
