The selection of Chaz Bono to compete on “Dancing With the Stars” is drawing some strong reaction. Message boards on the ABC website are filled with critical comments regarding Bono’s inclusion on the reality competition, with some accusing the network of stripping the show of its family-friendly reputation. Bono, the transgender son of music icon Cher and the late Sonny Bono, legally changed his gender and name from female to male last year. ABC said Bono was in rehearsals for the show and was unavailable to comment on the criticism. The network itself also declined to comment on the negative reaction.
The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, meantime, is praising the inclusion of Chaz and gay stylist Carson Kressly in “Dancing With The Stars'” upcoming season. In a statement, GLAAD called the move to include Bono, “a tremendous step forward for the public to recognize that transgender people are an important part of the fabric of American culture.” The 13th season premiere of “Dancing With The Stars” is scheduled for September 19th.
