“In honor of oil-soaked birds, ‘tweets’ are now ‘gurgles.'”
The above short Twitter message, posted in June by TV host Stephen Colbert (twitter.com/StephenAtHome) has been crowned by Twitter as the most retweeted tweet of 2010.
Colbert’s message was in response to the BP Gulf oil spill this summer (watch a clip of Colbert accepting his honour on The Colbert Report from Twitter co-founder Biz Stone).
A host of musicians also made the list, which was released by Twitter earlier this month.
Canadian rapper Drake came in second, with his philosophical post from September: “We always ignore the ones who adore us, and adore the ones who ignore us”; and fellow rapper Lil Wayne took the third spot with the exclamatory “Aaaaaaahhhhhhmmmmm baaaaakkkkkkkkkk!”, sent the day the rapper was released from prison.
Another Canadian, Justin Bieber, ranked at #4 on the list, and his name featured in two of the other top 10 tweets, demonstrating the young singers popularity on the medium.
Here’s the rest of the list:
5/ Al-Qaeda (A satiric account): “Just noticed Twitter keeps prompting me to “Add a location to your tweets”. Not falling for that one.”
6/ Joe Jonas: “I cry because I love Justin Bieber!!!”
7/ Lady Gaga: “I’m beautiful in my way, ’cause God makes no mistakes. I’m on the right track, baby. I was Born This Way.”
8/ Kanye West: “I’m sorry Taylor.”
9/ Rihanna: “Justin Bieber just flashed me his abs in the middle of a restaurant! Wow! He actually had a lil 6 pack! Sexy, lol!”
10/S**tmydadsays: “Don’t focus on the one guy who hates you. You don’t go to the park and set your picnic down next to the only pile of dog s**t.”
