The 28th Annual MTV Video Music Awards - Arrivals

The MTV Video Music Awards, more than any other award show, tends to produce some of the most standout moments in pop culture. Whether it’s a wardrobe malfunction, acceptance speech flub or shocking and raunchy performance, every VMA show leaves us with a few hilarious, WTF-worthy moments that become permanent trending topics.

As we prepare for what promises to be another jaw-dropping MTV Video Music Awards, look back at the nine craziest moments in the award show’s history:

The “Like A Virgin/Hollywood” Medley (2003)

The three-way makeout session that occurred between Madonna, Christina Aguilera, and Britney Spears is definitely one for the books. Madonna had the genius idea to re-create her iconic “Like A Virgin” video from 1984, having her pop princesses rock the same sexy bridal attire.

Lil Mama, You Don’t Even Go Here (2009)

One of the most WTF-worthy moments in VMA history comes to you courtesy of Lil Mama. Jay Z and Alicia Keys closed out the 2009 VMAs in what would have been a stellar performance of their collab single “New York State Of Mind.” But apparently, Lil Mama felt so inspired she couldn’t help but invite herself on stage in the middle of their performance. The awkward interruption was not at all appreciated by Hov, who can be seen literally shoo-ing Lil Mama off stage. What was she thinking? Where’s Julius when you need him? So many unanswered questions!

Miley Cyrus Puts It On Robin Thicke

Miley Cyrus put on one of the wackiest and most-talked about award show performances in history at the 2013 VMAs. In a quest to bury her Hannah Montana association once and for all, the scantily clad former Disney Star (and her foam finger) shocked the house by wearing a spandex and nude two-piece outfit, Bantu knots. Jaws dropped everywhere as the 20-something pop star welcomed singer Robin Thicke and treated the (then married) crooner to an extra-cheeky lap dance.

The Glory That Is Rihanna’s Stank Face (2013)

There’s a reason why Rihanna is perfect meme material — her face says it all! Nobody at the 2013 VMAs could be protected from the sting of Rihanna’s stank face. Miley Cyrus got a taste of it during her twerk-filled and down-right vulgar performance of “We Can’t Stop,” where she grinds all over Robin Thicke. Ms. Fenty’s iconic reaction was the perfect mixture of confusion and disgust. It happened again when Drake hit the stage for a rendition of “Hold On We’re Going Home,” and “Started From The Bottom.” When the camera panned to to the “Work” singer, she was basically throwing daggers with her eyes. Perhaps there was a beef brewing between these on-again, off-again lovers?

Kanye West Won’t Let Taylor Swift Finish

Two artists from polar opposite ends of the pop spectrum collided on this fateful day where a snatched mic changed everything. Before she was exposed as a music industry bully, Taylor Swift had to deal with an uninvited guest. In 2009 (which seemed to be the year of infamous interruptions), Taylor won a VMA for Best Female Video, and Kanye West happened to disagree and emerged from the audience, grabbed her mic, and uttered those infamous words: “Imma let you finish . . . but Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time.” Despite a brief make-up, there is still bad blood between the two artists which ended in “Kimye” leaking a recorded conversation with Taylor as she gave him the OK to put her name in his “Famous” song.

Beyoncé’s Pregnancy Reveal

Nobody put “Love On Top” quite like Queen Bey. Beyoncé hit the red carpet at the 2011 VMAs and gave the world an extra special surprise by revealing her baby bump. Later that evening, she performed her hit “Love on Top” in a sequined jacket with rigorous choreography and belting out high notes, and literally “dropped the mic” by officially revealing little Blue Ivy in the womb. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house.

2010 MTV Video Music Awards - Show

Lady Gaga Comes Dressed In Raw Meat

Yes, a dress made of raw meat is what Lady Gaga wore to the 2010 VMAs. But such shocking garb is to be expected from an artist as quirky as Gaga, who has also arrived to one awards show red carpet in an egg. At least she was able to accept her Video of the Year Award in style!

Nicki Minaj Just Wants To Know “What’s Good”

During her acceptance speech for Hip-Hop Video of the Year, Nicki Minaj confronted host Miley Cyrus for the slick comments she made about her in an interview with The New York Times. Nicki kept it cute for the first half of the interview, and then turned straight Jamaica, Queens, on ’em as she addressed the elephant in room.  “…This b*tch that had a lot of stuff to say about me in the press. Miley, what’s good?” Miley, stunned, said her words were “manipulated.”

Amber Rose & Blac Chyna Keep It Honest

Amber Rose is on a mission to end slut shaming once and for all. In a very tongue-and-cheek move, the video vixen recruited her bestie, Blac Chyna, to show up to the VMAs in coordinating outfits with rather … interesting fabric. The words “bitch,” “slut,” “gold digger,” and “whore” were boldly inscribed in neon letters all over their outfits. The goal with this stunt was to reclaim their power by using the insults they’ve so often been called. How’s that for girl power?
