Kanye West interviews are few and far between nowadays, especially with the outspoken rapper using Twitter more often.
But fresh off Monday’s night appearance at the Met Gala, ‘Ye called in to Steve Harvey‘s morning show to chop it up about everything from how “Ultralight Beam” came together, to the infamous moment where he stole the mic from Taylor Swift on the VMA stage.
Listen to the full 20-minute interview above and check out some of the highlights below.
On how “Ultralight Beam” came together:
“Me and my dad went to go visit Kirk [Franklin] at his house four Christmases ago. That was the beginning of our relationship…We were just blessed to be in the room at that time when the ultralight beam came through us. I can’t explain that song in notes, rhythm, drum beats. I can only explain that feeling. There was a young lady in the studio that pulled up an Instagram with the little girl on it saying, “we don’t want no devils in the house!” Literally, this is all coming together a week and a half before the album, to the point where we had to make it the first song on the album.”
On the Twitter beef with Wiz Khalifa:
“If you read the KK , you thought he might have been talking about my wife. And you know how you would feel if someone was talking about your wife. Did I take it too far? You know what, I’m from 79th street Chicago…I can’t say that if someone says “eff you,” I can’t say I’m not gonna say the exact same thing back.
But one thing that I want to really express to the people is everyday I look and I play with my daughter, I’m playing with Saint. I talked to Wiz, Amber talked to Kim, and I really want to stress the amount of respect that I have for parents. There is no concept of anyone beating up on someone else’s child or that type of concept. So everyday I actually feel more deeply, deeply, deeply apologetic about that concept, because I only want to put out positive, positive, positive concepts.”
On complaints about the price of Yeezy clothing:
“Mark my words, mark my words, I’m coming for their neck. I’m about to drop these prices in a way that I can connect to the Kanye that I was when I was 14 years old and my mom could barely afford it…beauty, color, proportion, shape, that’s important, man. There’s more colors that are important than just green!”
On The Life Of Pablo tour:
“You know my tour game is strong. My tour game is unprecedented. So we’re going to go out in September I believe, and we’re just working on some of the ideas right now. But as I said before, I’m trying to literally inspire these kids the way Disney inspired me when I saw the original Star Wars.”
On mic-jacking Taylor Swift at the 2009 MTV VMAs:
“As soon as Britney shaved her head and they saw the money going down, they had already marked what that award was going to be that night. But they didn’t expect no activist that had just lost his momma a year [earlier] sitting there with a bottle of Hennessy. The only reason why I drank the Hennessy in the first place was because I said, ‘I’ma have to just get drunk to deal with all the lies I’m about to see’.”
