At the center of Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman’s story is actor Sean Penn, who snagged an interesting and pretty random exclusive interview with the enigmatic drug lord leading up to his capture. Now, Penn has finally broken his silence about the meeting.

In an email to The Associated Press, Penn was probed about his involvement in El Chapo’s capture, saying, “I’ve got nothin’ to hide.”

Although Reuters said Penn’s meeting with the Mexican gangster was key in finding him at his home in Los Mochis, Mexico, the actor also didn’t care much about a suggestion that he was “taking hits” for agreeing to submit his article to Chapo prior to it being published by Rolling Stone. Penn responded, “No, you’re reading hits.”

The site reports:

Rolling Stone magazine published an article by Penn on Saturday based on his interview with Guzman. Gomez said a line of investigation had been opened into the meeting between Guzman and Penn in early October at a jungle hideout, adding that any possible criminal investigation against the actor-director would depend on what, if any, deals he struck with Guzman.

U.S. investigators will also examine Penn’s interactions with Guzman, two U.S. government sources said on Monday, but it was unclear if prosecutors would try to force the actor to turn over information about the interview.

In other El Chapo news, we’ve finally gotten a look inside his plush hideout.

The unassuming newly renovated Mexico home has olive trees planted around the grounds for extra privacy. His pad is a mess now due to the raid, and features a bullet-riddled fridge with its contents spilt all over the floor. Much of the home is bare, save for a few couches.

Chapo also had several DVDs of Kate del Castillo’s telenovela, the actress who played an integral part in getting Penn’s interview. The house also features a secret doorway hidden behind a mirror, which he tried to use when Mexican Marines began closing in on him. The doorway led to the city’s drainage system, and at the end of the tunnel was an automatic weapon, and an exit onto the street outside.

El Chapo was so close to getting away from authorities… again.
