Chiquis Rivera is being called out on social media for singing to the Virgin of Guadalupe this month at the Univision special “Las Mañanitas a la Virgen de Guadalupe” event that was transmitted from Chicago.

An emotional Rivera sang a Banda version of Rocio Durcal’s “Amor Eterno” (Eternal Love), telling viewers that she chose this song because it reminded her of her late mother.

“It’s a song that I dedicate a lot to my mom, it touches my heart, and all I want is for her to be here with me,” she said during the TV special. “She’s always here with us… Jenni lives.”

She also dedicated the song to the Virgin of Guadalupe, which is celebrated on December 12th by Catholics all over the world, especially in Latin America. In Mexico this is one of the most important holidays of the year because Our Lady of Guadalupe is the patron saint of Mexico.

“It’s the first time I sing to the virgin, with a lot of love.. because she represents a mother, and I’m singing to her with lots of love and respect,” she added.

While the 29-year-old singer got teary-eyed at the event, where she was grateful and happy for singing to both the virgin and her mother, some critics took to the Internet to rain on her parade.

Chiquis was highly criticized Monday, being called a hypocrite because she’s a Christian and not Catholic.

One person on Facebook called Rivera’s presentation a mockery to the virgin and even described the Mexican-American songstress as an opportunist.

“The religion she practices does not believe in the virgin. The only thing she [Chiquis] cares about is gaining fame and she doesn’t care how,” they said. “It’s not fair that she takes advantage of the virgin’s day to come out on television, she’s a hypocrite.”
