Who knew Barbara Walters could throw shade?!
According to USA Today, Katy Perry recently sat down for an interview with Billboard and told a story of the time she sat down for a chat for Barbara Walters’ 10 Most Fascinating People of 2011 special. Andddddd…it didn’t go well.
To start, Perry’s marriage to Russell Brand was on the rocks. Bad. To the point where she says she was having suicidal thoughts. She confessed to Billboard that her song “By the Grace of God” confessed how serious those thoughts were. She said, “That song is evident of how tough it really was at a certain point. I asked myself, ‘Do I want to endure? Should I continue living?’
But in the midst of all that drama, she had her huge interview with Barbara Walters (as if she needed any more stress). “I shouldn’t have done the interview,” Perry said. “I was playing Madison Square Garden that same night, and I knew that the end of my marriage was coming. I was just exhausted and stressed.”
Perry was “running late,” and despite alerting everyone, she says, “Barbara showed up at the original time anyway. When I got there, I apologized immediately, but then she said to me, ‘You know, I’ve only ever waited for one other person this long, and you know who that person was? Judy Garland. You know how she turned out, right?’ I was like, ‘Oh, snap! Yes, b****!‘”
(FYI for those who don’t know their Judy Garland history. “How she turned out” was pretty tragic. Bouts with alcoholism, depression and death by overdose.)
On Monday’s The View, Barbara Walters addressed the singer and her story with an apology by saying, “Katy, if I made you feel at all unhappy, during a time when you were obviously unhappy, and I didn’t know, I’m sorry,” she said. “But you can’t always know!”
Perry doesn’t have anything bad to say about Walters, who was simply doing her job. “I think it’s the coolest thing that Barbara Walters shaded me,” she tells Billboard. “I just couldn’t tell her as we were sitting down for a mega-interview, ‘Hey, my marriage is falling apart. Give me a break.'”
Hopefully now that Katy has moved on and is in a much happier place, she and Barbara can get together and hug it out.
