Mother Monster Talks Turkey Traditions And Fans

Lady Gaga says she has two families — her biological family and her family of “Little Monster” fans. The Mother Monster explained to “Good Morning America’s” Robin Roberts this week that she’ll be spending time with the former this Thanksgiving, but that doesn’t mean the latter won’t join in every once in a while. Gaga says her father “refuses” to change their phone number, so they get a non-stop string of calls whenever the pop star is home for the holidays. She says no one is too upset about he interruption, and she often takes the time to chat with the lucky fans. Gaga also talked about some of her other holiday traditions, which she says include eating “all day long” and watching whatever special is on TV. This year, that special will be her own, as “A Very Gaga Thanksgiving” is set to air Thursday on ABC at 9:30 p.m. Eastern.

Lady Gaga is also helping fans get ready for the busy holiday shopping season with the new “Gaga’s Workshop” at Barneys New York. The singer and the department store unveiled an entire floor full of Gaga-related gifts earlier this week. Gaga called it a “more whimsical approach” to shopping, and says that 25-percent of the proceeds from the various products will go to her new Born This Way Foundation.

Lady Gaga will be giving her Little Monster fans her own brand of dessert this Thanksgiving. According to the “Los Angeles Times,” the singer is set to star in her first Turkey Day special, “A Very Gaga Thanksgiving.” ABC’s 90-minute broadcast will feature a small concert in front of the star’s family and friends as well as an interview with Katie Couric at Gaga’s alma mater, Sacred Heart Catholic School in Manhattan. Couric promises an in-depth conversation that will impress, delight and surprise viewers. As for the music, Gaga will reportedly perform “The Lady Is a Tramp” with Tony Bennett and the holiday classic “White Christmas” as well as “You and I,” “The Edge of Glory” and other hits. “A Very Gaga Thanksgiving” is scheduled to air November 24th at 9:30 p.m. Eastern on ABC.

As crazy as you may think your family is—what with creepy uncle telling TMI stories and grandma getting schnockered way before dinner—just be thankful you don’t have to spend turkey day with any of the following cuckoo crazy clans.

Rehab stints. Reported racial slurs. More wives than you can count. The occasional holiday stabbing attempt. Not to mention having to watch Bristol Palin practice her cha-cha over and over and over!

Well, we wonder which of these dining sitchs would make you vamanos the fastest:

The Palins

Reported racial slur-filled outbursts and the occasional tabloid-rumored drug deal aren’t the least of it. With Sarah putting on her happy homemaker persona—we assume in this scenario the cameras are rolling for her second TLC special—while Todd plasters a smile on his puss in the background. Don’t bother trying to get a word in, with Sarah boasting how her fellow mama grizzlies are taking over Washington! Hey, maybe Willow will slip you some of that liquid sustenance her pals swear she downs so well. That’ll take the edge off.

The Lohans

While Linds is apparent tres sad that she can’t skip town to spend T-giving with Dina and Co. in Long Island, we say count your blessings, babe! Instead of having to listen to the media-loving matriarch pitch post-rehab paparazzi outings or complain about her equally annoying ex-hubby, Linds can clock in some R&R at Betty Ford. Plus, I’m sure B.F. has a nice meal planned between group sessions.

The Browns

You all remember “party boy” Kody Brown and his Sister Wives Meri, Janelle, Christine and newbie Robyn, right? Cause you all voted them the couple (or, uh, clan?) with the ickiest sex life. So could you imagine giving thanks with the polygamist pack, what those poor ladies saying how grateful they are to get a fourth of their stringy-haired hippie husband’s time. And with 16 kids too, don’t expect to get a drumstick.

The Sheens

Talk about drama with a capital “D.” Charlie and Denise may have patched up their already-too-patchy relaysh of late, but things aren’t quite as cordial with soon-to-be ex wife Brooke Mueller. Put everyone together (plus a reality show camera or two) and you’re guaranteed more than a “bad night,” as Charlie dubbed his latest meltdown. Plus, there’s that turkey carving knife and we all know what happens when you combine Charlie, holidays, and objects with stabbing potential.

On OCTOBER 30th, 1978, the infamous WKRP IN CINCINNATI TV show, “Turkeys Away” aired for the first time. This episode was named by TV GUIDE as the 40th greatest in TV history.

The classic report by newsman LES NESSMAN is a parody of HERBERT MORRISON‘s famous coverage of the HINDENBURG disaster. “It’s a helicopter, and it’s coming this way. It’s flying something behind it, I can’t quite make it out, it’s a large banner and it says, uh – Happy… Thaaaaanksss… giving! … From … W … K … R … P!! What a sight, ladies and gentlemen, what a sight. The ‘copter seems to be circling the parking area now, I guess it’s looking for a place to land. No! Something just came out of the back of the helicopter! It’s, uh, a dark object. Perhaps a skydiver. Plummeting to the earth from only two thousand feet in the air. A second, a third! No parachutes yet. Can’t be skydivers… I can’t tell just yet what they are, but – Oh my God, they’re turkeys!! Johnny, can you get this? Oh, they’re plunging to the earth right in front of our eyes! One just went through the windshield of a parked car! Oh, this is just terrible! The crowd is running around pushing each other! Oh, my goodness! Oh, the humanity! People are running about! The turkeys are hitting the ground like sacks of wet cement! Honestly, folks I don’t know how much longer … the crowd is running for their lives.”

Thanksgiving is one of those holidays firmly planted in the realm of “the bigger, the better”: large family gatherings, lavish dinners and no small amounts of hustle and bustle. But what if, by some wayward circumstance, you and your significant other find yourselves just a duo this holiday season? Here are three simple and fun ways to partake in the spirit of Turkey Day, when it’s just two of you.

1. Start Your Own Traditions in the Kitchen. Chances are the older womenfolk in both your families handled much of the holiday cooking, so here’s chance to take both of your traditional recipes and get creative. You could even do it Top Chef competition-style to see whose family really does make the best gingerbread cookies. 2. Go Black Friday Ogling. Black Friday is only stressful and aggravating if you’re actually participating in the melee. Should you choose to join in on consumer mania, you can double-team it. NATIONAL: Hey! No Second Helpings Of Pumpkin Pie!

Nestle — which sells nearly all the canned pumpkin in the U.S. — says poor weather hurt its harvest, creating a potential shortage of its Libby’s pumpkin pie products through the holidays.

The company said heavy rains made it nearly impossible to pick its pumpkins during this year’s harvest. The longer the pumpkins sit in the muddy fields, the more they deteriorate. As a result, the company announced this week that it would not pack any more pumpkins for the season — which means it may be hard to find its canned pumpkin and pumpkin pie filling product until next year’s harvest.

“Mother Nature had other plans for us,” the company said in an open apology to customers online.

Nestle is the largest national brand for canned pumpkin products, with 80 to 90 percent of the market, the company said.

It plants a special strain of pumpkin at a farm in Morton, Ill., which provides nearly all its supply. Nestle estimates if you turned all the pumpkins it grows on the farm to pie, it would total 90 million pies.

“There are a lot of beautiful pumpkins out there that we just can’t rescue,” said Nestle spokeswoman Roz O’Hearn.

The company had a wet harvest last year, too, which meant it didn’t have a surplus to carry over into this year and led to spotty shortages in late summer and early fall. The harvest started in August and it began getting products on its shelves soon after, but it won’t be able to meet its normal demand.

“We hope everyone understands that Mother Nature was a little difficult this year and hope she’s a little bit kinder to us next year,” O’Hearn said.
