I was with my boyfriend, whom I’ll call Chad, for over 4 years. Every day we talked about getting married, starting a family and building a long life together. All of that changed abruptly last year. After accidentally taking Chad’s laptop to work by mistake, I found out that he was cheating on me with not one, but two women he became friends with online. I was devastated as I read all the e-mails and messages back and forth between him and these women.

For almost a year Chad had been lying to me. He said he wanted us to be together forever, but that’s the same thing he told each of the two women he was courting online. I was angry and I felt betrayed. After all we had been through together, how could he do this to me?
I waited all day to confront him. When I saw him after work, he already knew something was wrong. I hadn’t taken any of his calls that day. We fought about his infidelity. He said he was bored and that everything occurred online. He said he had never met these women. I asked him to move out of our house until I could get my head clear.
I later contacted each of the women and they did confirm his story. They both claimed never to have met him online. I was hurt, but eventually I gave Chad another chance. He moved back into the house two weeks later. It was a very hard decision for me to give him another chance, but so far, it’s been a year and things are okay. From time to time I’ll check his e-mails or his cell phone, but so far nothing out of the ordinary has happened. I will never know why Chad did what he did, but soon after his infidelity he changed his cell phone number and all of his e-mail accounts so these women wouldn’t be able to contact him anymore. Did I do the right thing? Only time will tell. – Jennifer, Vermont.
