From our friends at IndyStar.com:
At least one person is dead after gunshots were fired in a parking garage in Downtown, Indianapolis metropolitan police said.
The incident happened about 3:25 p.m. at Meridan and Washington Streets, according to an IMPD dispactcher.
Police say the shooting was a suicide. A white male fired 2 shots before shooting himself. He reportedly fell 8 stories from the parking garage, located just south of Washington and Meridian streets.
Police have reopened Washington Street. Meridian Street remains closed between Washington and Maryland.
At about 4 p.m., paramedics removed the body from the sidewalk.
Kristofer Karol, 28, Indianapolis, was on the second floor of Borders, 11 South Meridian Street, around 3:30 p.m. when he heard shots fired. He came down the steps and saw police officers pointing their firearms at a parking garage next door. That’s when he said he saw the legs of a body on the ground.
Using his cell phone, he sent a Twitter “In downtown borders…dead body on ground after gunfire..police pointing guns at nearby garage.”
He said the patrons in the store were told to wait as police investigated and the people inside were relieved there was not a second shooter, he said.
“I’ve never been in a situation like this before. It’s definitely an interesting experience to say the least.”
Tony Lightfoot, manager of King David Dogs, 15 N. Pennsylvania St., was serving a customer at the hot dog shop when he heard a series of three or four shots — “boom, boom, boom, boom.” The owner calmly ordered the store to close for the day.
Dozens of people were gathered at the scene near the intersection of Washington and Meridian streets, but some of those by-standers may have been related to a food promotion at a nearby restaurant.
No other details were immediately available.
