“Prominent” DC Comics Character To Come Out As Gay

Marvel Comics’ first openly gay superhero is getting married.  “X-Men” member Northstar will wed his longtime partner Kyle in “Astonishing X-Men, Number 51″ due out on June 20th.  Marvel Comics first outed Northstar as gay back in 1992.  Twenty years later, Marvel says the time is right to hold a gay wedding.  Editor-in-chief Axel Alonso tells “Rolling Stone,” “Our comics are always best when they respond to and reflect developments in the real world.  We’ve been doing that for decades and this is just the latest expression of that.”

News about the “Astonishing X-Men” gay wedding comes on the heels of DC Comics’ own announcement about its plans to out an existing superhero from the DC universe.  Publishers for DC, which is home to Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman, won’t say which superhero will be outed, only that the character will now be one of the comic franchise’s “most prominent gay characters.”
