Golden State Warriors v Oklahoma City Thunder - Game Four

Kevin Durant was almost a Celtic. And that’s all thanks to Tom Brady.

As dozens of talented NBA players entered free agency a few weeks ago, moves and major deals were happening left and right.

One of the best players on the market was, of course, Kevin, and after shockingly leaving the Oklahoma City Thunder, he joined the Golden State Warriors. However, it was widely reported that over Independence Day weekend, Tom was spotted in the Hamptons, where the Boston Celtics were trying to pitch Kevin.

Many weren’t surprised that Boston pulled out all the stops to nab the premier player, but as we now know it wouldn’t be enough. Speaking to reporters after Team USA’s practice in Las Vegas, Kevin revealed the football quarterback’s presence made his decision that much harder.

Kevin recounts seeing Tom at the pitch, saying, “I was ready to just say, ‘All right. Let’s go. I’m ready to go,’ seeing Tom Brady there. Just seeing someone so successful at his craft and just a great ambassador for the game of football and the city of Boston, it was just great to be in the presence of greatness. But at the same time, I knew I couldn’t let that distract me. But he was great. It was great to see him.”

Danny Ainge, who’s the Celtics’ president of basketball operations, knew Kevin was a fan of Tom’s and thought of the idea.

I just thought it would be a good idea,” Ainge said. “We would like to get a lot of guys to come, but Tom was available. I reached out to him and he thought about it for a day and said, ‘OK, I’ll do it.’ And, in a very short turnaround, he wanted to go. He had met KD one time before. I told him how much of a fan KD was of his. It was a fun time for all of us to have Tom down there with us.”

Good call, Danny.
