Funeral ceremony of the democracy martyrs in Turkey

At least 265 lives have been lost and another 1,440 injured after the failed attempt to overthrow the government by its own military occurred in Turkey.

The military takeover began late Friday evening in Istanbul, where troops blocked two bridges in the city while the remainder stormed the streets in military tanks and started firing at monumental buildings.

According to the New York Times, Prime Minister Binali Yildirim described the coup attempt as “a stain in the history of Turkish democracy.” The prime minister announced the detainment of 2,839 military personnel linked to the coup attempt.

This isn’t the first coup attempt that has occurred in Turkey; the Turkish army has intervened with the government 4 times since 1960 after ongoing tension with President Tayyip Erdogan’s Justice and Development Party and its views on political Islam.
