A 5-year-old boy (pictured) was not allowed to enroll at the Roberts Road Elementary School in Hockley, Texas, because school officials allegedly do not approve of his shoulder-length hair. Even though the school claims to be merely enforcing a strict dress code, the child’s mom, Ursula Martin, insists that her son’s long hair is a decision based on religion, reports Countusin.com.
The school’s dress code states that a boy’s hair cannot brush against his shirt collar. Despite Martin’s charges of intolerance, the Waller Independent School District states that they would like to arrive at a happy medium with the boy’s mom and released the following statement regarding the case:
The principal of each campus shall apply the grooming code and make all final decisions regarding what is acceptable and appropriate, considering the age and activities of the students. Guidelines and administrative decisions regarding appropriate dress will reflect concern for health and safety of students and the influence of specific dress or grooming on the overall educational climate of the school.
Meanwhile, Martin, who says she just moved to Hockley from Katy, Texas, says that her child’s previous school had no objections to his long hair. The miffed Mom, contends, “He doesn’t feel like he should have to cut his hair to go to school. And I don’t understand — what does the length of his hair have to do with him being educated?” Martin argues.
